Stanback officially joins UNLV basketball team

Mon, Aug 25, 2008 (4:24 p.m.)

Chace Stanback has officially enrolled at UNLV and become a member of the Rebels basketball team.

Stanback, a 6-foot-8, 210-pound swingman, transferred from UCLA and will have three seasons of eligibility at UNLV starting in 2009-10. He must sit out the upcoming season according to NCAA transfer rules.

“We are very happy that Chase has decided to enroll at UNLV,” Rebels coach Lon Kruger said in a statement. “He is an outstanding young man who is extremely versatile on the court.”

Stanback played in 25 games as a Bruin, averaging 5.8 minutes. He shot 40.4 percent from the floor and averaged 1.8 points a game.

He played two season at Los Angeles Fairfax High with Rebels power forward Matt Shaw, who will sit out this season after undergoing knee surgery.

“During his redshirt season,” Kruger said of Stanback, “his efforts against our eligible players will make for very competitive practices.”

Those practices figure to be very intense, indeed, since Kentucky transfer Derrick Jasper also will be a part of them.

The UNLV first team likely will be Tre’Von Willis, Wink Adams, Joe Darger, Rene Rougeau and new 7-foot center Beas Hamga.

If Hamga doesn’t cut it, especially at the start of the season, former Findlay Prep center and Swedish national player Brice Massamba could fill that interior position.

In any case, Massamba will battle on the second team in practice, as will some combination of Jasper, Stanback, senior guard Marceco Rutledge, sophomore guard Kendall Wallace, and newcomers Oscar Bellfield, DeShawn Mitchell and tough low-post player Darris Santee.

Some practices will no doubt be tougher than some games for UNLV this season.
