Findlay Prep has concerns for finale in New York

Thu, Mar 6, 2008 (10:50 a.m.)

Free throws and turnovers might be issues for Findlay College Prep today at 4 p.m. in the title game of the National Prep Championship against Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military Academy.

The Pilots only shot 37-for-69 at the line in their quarterfinal and semifinal victories at Fordham University in the Bronx, N.Y. Worse, they committed 31 turnovers, most in their two-year history, Tuesday night.

“We have to shore those up,” Findlay coach Mike Peck said early Wednesday morning.

Tuesday night, Findlay led Fitchburg (Mass.) Notre Dame Prep by 18 points with 12 minutes remaining before wilting. But the Pilots eked out a 74-70 victory in overtime over the defending prep school champion.

Guards Jacques Streeter (19 points) and Jorge Gutierrez (12 points, 15 rebounds, 7 steals), and UNLV-bound center Brice Massamba (11 points, 10 boards) paced the Pilots.

“They have good guards and ‘bigs,’ “ Peck said of the Hargrave Tigers, “but I think our guards have a slight edge.”
