You can't help feeling sorry for Palo Verde senior Liloa Nobriga.
Nobriga led Palo Verde’s basketball team with 16 points Friday night in the large-school state championship game at the Orleans Arena, but it was not enough as the Panthers were defeated by Bishop Gorman 56-55.
Unfortunately for Nobriga, the outcome was all too familiar.
He had 19 tackles in the state championship football game last December, but Palo Verde came up short 13-12 against Reno‘s McQueen High.
Two games. Two points. Two heartbreaking outcomes.
“It was a tough loss but like I said after the (state title) football game, there are two teams and we were one of them,” Nobriga said. “We wanted to win, but we had a great year. So I’m proud of that. I know we are champions.”
Nobriga, a linebacker, will continue his football career and quest for a championship at Colorado next year.
“Nobriga is a winner,” Palo Verde basketball coach Jermone Riley said. “He is a football player, a basketball player and he probably does a whole lot of other stuff well that we don’t know about. He really showed up to play tonight.”
