It takes a great team to beat one of ours

NOW:

I suppose if you have to lose, it might as well be to the national or world champions.

Back in March, the UNLV men's basketball team was eliminated in the second round of the NCAA tournament by Kansas.

The Jayhawks went on to the win the national championship.

Two weeks ago, in San Bernardino, Calif., the Paseo Verde Little League team from Henderson lost 4-3 to Waipio, Hawaii in the West Region championship game.

On Sunday, the Hawaiian kids beat a team from Mexico 12-3 in the nationally televised Little League World Series championship game in Williamsport, Pa.

Having pointed this out, even should Utah State upset UNLV in Saturday's college football season opener at Sam Boyd Stadium, I don't see the Aggies beating Georgia -- or anybody else -- in this year's BCS championship game.

THEN:

At my high school, the football players didn't hang out with the basketball players all that much. But one year, when a few of us helped a few of them dump the 7-man blocking sled into a ditch alongside the railroad tracks late at night during two-a-days, we seemed to earn their admiration.
