House Ethics Committee extends probe of Berkley, says will decide action by July

Fri, Mar 23, 2012 (10:03 a.m.)

The House Ethics Committee announced today that it is responding to a February referral from the Office of Congressional Ethics and will extend a probe of Rep. Shelley Berkley regarding her advocating for legislation that could have helped her husband's medical practice.

The extension obviously casts a pall over Berkley's bid for the U.S. Senate against Sen. Dean Heller -- at least until the committee acts, which the statement says will be before July 9.

The complaint came after a brutal, front-page New York Times piece and was filed by Nevada Republicans

The complaint could, of course, be dismissed, but POLITICO reports that the OCE called for a full probe of Berkley.

No response yet from Team Berkley. But I can guess what the response is from Team Heller.

UPDATE: Berkley campaign boss Jessica Mackler responds: "The Nevada Republican Party filed a complaint against Congresswoman Berkley. As the committee reviews this complaint, they will determine that Congresswoman Shelley Berkley’s only concern is for the well being of Nevada’s patients. That’s why she fought against out-of-state Washington bureaucrats from restricting patients’ access to care and why she joined fellow Reps. Jon Porter and Dean Heller to stop Nevada’s only kidney transplant program from being shut down, which would have denied life saving treatment to hundreds of Nevadans.”
