Ferraro twins set to return to Wranglers

Chris and Peter Ferraro expect to return to the Las Vegas Wranglers for a second season in 2008-09.

The team announced Tuesday morning that, with the signing of center Matt Beaudoin, the roster for the upcoming season had been boosted to six.

The Ferraros weren’t in that group. However, Chris Ferraro said it’s a mere formality that the first identical twins to play on the same team in the NHL will return to Las Vegas.

He said he and his brother have had discussions with Wranglers coach and general manager Glen Gulutzan.

“He’s pretty quiet throughout the summertime,” Chris Ferraro said of Gulutzan. “All his focus is into his family. The discussions we’ve had have been limited, not too in-depth. But we will be back. We’re looking forward to coming back.”

The 35-year-old Ferraros are in New York, spending time with their family and running some hockey camps.

Peter Ferraro was 11th in the ECHL during the 2007-08 regular season with 73 points (36 goals and 37 assists) in 68 games.

He recorded 21 points in a playoff run in which Las Vegas lost to Cincinnati in the Kelly Cup Finals. It was the first championship series appearance for the Wranglers in their five-year history.

Chris Ferraro was shelved for the rest of the regular season after getting sucker-punched by Robin Gomez in Victoria, B.C., on March 1.

Ferraro sustained multiple effects, like blurred vision and nausea, from the injury, but he returned at the end of the series against Cincinnati.

A case against Gomez has been inching through the Canadian court system, but Ferraro learned that Gomez pleaded not guilty to assault charges late last week.

Attorneys and the judge are determining if there’s sufficient evidence to proceed with a trial.

“The big thing is, I just don’t want it to go unnoticed,” Chris Ferraro said. “We all do things in the heat of the moment, but that wasn’t in the heat of the moment.

“He was on the bench and had about five minutes to evaluate what he wanted to do. That’s the reason it can’t go unnoticed.”

From New York on Tuesday morning, Ferraro said he isn’t looking for sympathy from anyone. Still, a certain phone call or two from some key people would have been welcomed over the past few months.

“Not that I’m looking for this or hoping for it, but I’ve never received a phone call from him or anyone in the organization with concern to how I’m doing,” Ferraro said. “For me to turn around and say, Oh, OK, and walk in a different direction? I don’t think it’s appropriate.”

In addition to Beaudoin, the Wranglers have inked defensemen Jason Dest, Mike Madill and Bret Tyler, and forwards Brandon Kaleniecki and Tyler Mosienko to deals for the upcoming season.
