Dismissed Rebel was driving friend’s car

Thu, Feb 28, 2008 (1:40 p.m.)

Former UNLV basketball player Marcus Lawrence was driving a friend’s vehicle when he was involved in a one-car accident Feb. 15.

In an accident report released Wednesday by the Nevada Highway Patrol, David Fry was identified as the registered owner of the gray 2004 Nissan Maxima that Lawrence wrecked.

Several sources said Fry is a friend of Lawrence. Neither Fry nor Lawrence was home, at the residence addresses listed on the accident report, when visited by a Sun reporter Thursday morning.

An NHP officer wrote that the left side of the Maxima hit a concrete barrier coming out of the airport tunnel interchange ramp eastbound on I-215 at 7:34 a.m. on Feb. 15.

Lawrence fled, but NHP officer quickly apprehended him. The 20-year-old Las Vegas native was arrested for driving under the influence and failure to drive in a travel lane.

Three days later, Rebels coach Lon Kruger dismissed Lawrence from the team.
