It’s always something in Reno

Thu, Feb 28, 2008 (2:43 p.m.)

There was no intention here to blog about Reno on three consecutive days. But can I help if it that town up north, as UNLV football coach Mike Sanford might put it, has suddenly become "The Biggest Little Sports News City in the World?"

The latest from Flannel Shirts Are Us: The former UNR soccer coach has blown the whistle on the golf coach, and she apparently has blown it so loud that they heard it at NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis.

Terri Patraw, the ex-UNR women's soccer coach, snitched on men's golf coach Rich Merritt for providing free meals and frequent flier miles to his players. She claims she was fired for throwing her former coaching colleague under the bus.

Anyway, the NCAA gumshoes will be in Reno next week, to get to the bottom of the situation, or at least to suggest a penalty that is a little stiffer than suspending Merritt for three golf matches, which is what the UNR athletic department did after "self-reporting" itself.

"They're following up with the allegations ... so we welcome them on campus," UNR athletic director Cary Groth said.

Yeah, right. Just like Dean Wormer liked having John "Bluto" Blutarsky on campus in "Animal House."
