More on the 51s
Despite a pretty rocky start to the season, former 51s lefty Brett Cecil will make his major league debut for the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday at home against Cleveland.
Cecil, a 22-year-old starter who was the 38th overall selection in hte 2007 MLB draft, was 0-3 in four starts with the 51s, boasting an 8.31 ERA. He allowed 22 hits and 16 earned runs in 17.1 innings, striking out 9 and walking 8.
Cecil is the third starter the Jays have already called up from Triple-A Las Vegas. In the same move, the organization called up 25-year-old righty Robert Ray, who made his major league debut on Saturday against Baltimore, giving up 3 earned runs in 5.2 innings in a game Toronto ultimately won in 11 innings.
At the same time, Toronto sent Brian Burres back down to Vegas along with starter David Purcey. Burres went 0-2 in 2 starts with the big club, surrendering 10 earned runs in 6.1 innings pitched.
While Cecil has struggled in Triple-A both this year and last, he was golden in both Single-A and Double-A. Finishing his season in 2008 with Double-A New Hampshire, he was 6-2 with a 2.55 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 77.2 innings.
Tuesday's Jays game starts at 9:37 a.m., PST.
