Vegas Play of the Day: Giants at Phillies

Sun, Jun 7, 2015 (6:06 a.m.)

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

San Francisco Giants minus-130 at Philadelphia: $875 to win $695: I’m all-in. Someone had to be the first to bust in our play of the day contest, and after more than one year, my starting bankroll — fake, thankfully — is down to one last bet.

I will continue my baseball handicapping strategy and wager against the worst pitcher, and possibly team, on the betting board. Knowing my luck in this column space, here’s surely how today’s Giants-Phillies game will pan out: Philly’s Sean O’Sullivan, who sports an embarrassing 5.04 earned run average and shouldn’t be a big-league pitcher, will toss a no-hitter.

But that still seems impossible, even with my poor handicapping. O’Sullivan last week gave up four home runs in a loss to the Mets and opponents are batting .290 against him this year. That means one out of about every three batters gets a hit. He had just 19 strikeouts in 39 innings, meaning the Giants will be putting the ball in play.

For O’Sullivan’s career, he has 129 strikeouts in 270 innings, which explains a 11-21 career mark and 5.79 earned run average.

Here’s hoping readers have been smart enough to wager against my selections the past 18 months. If so, considering I’m 15 wagers under .500, you should be driving a new sports car or have down payment money for a new house. Just don’t bet against me today. Yes, O’Sullivan is that bad.

Standings: Bern (82-71-1, $11,755), Keefer (82-82-2, $9,617), Brewer (70-85-3, $875)
