Washington Capitals center Lars Eller (20), of Denmark, battles for the puck with Toronto Maple Leafs center Leo Komarov (47), of Russia, during the second period of Game 5 in an NHL Stanley Cup hockey first-round playoff series, Friday, April 21, 2017, in Washington.

We’ve entered the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015. Bern stepped away in the middle of the 2016-2017 season with a 16-12 record and $13,317 bankroll, with Mike Grimala taking his place.

Washington Capitals plus-125 at Toronto Maple Leafs: $400 to win $500

The young Maple Leafs have put up a fight, but I think the best team in the NHL finally closes out this difficult first-round matchup tonight.

This has been one of the closest and most entertaining series of the first round, with four of the first five games going to overtime. Washington heads to Toronto tonight, where the teams split the first two games. The Capitals were the best road team in the entire NHL this year with a 23-12-6 record so the hostile environment won’t bother this veteran team much.

As great as Alex Ovechkin is, he gets a lot of grief for his inability to win in the postseason. I think Ovechkin has a monster night to lead the Caps into the second round, one game removed from what looked like a serious injury when he was clipped by Nazem Kadri in game five.

Last week I said I’d take the Pittsburgh Penguins whenever they are underdogs and while I don’t feel quite as strongly about the Capitals I’m going with the Presidents’-Trophy-winning underdogs tonight.

Current Standings: Grimala (7-11, $8,233), Granger (14-18-1, $8,227), Keefer (42-35-3, $8,210), Brewer (29-29-1, $7,485)
