Vegas Play of the Day: Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox

Wed, Aug 1, 2018 (12:22 p.m.)

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Kansas City Royals plus-116 at Chicago White Sox: $300 to win $348

There’s a morbid curiosity in diving into the worst game on the baseball betting board in the middle of the summer. Often, there’s also some extractable value.

That might be the case here, when the dreadful White Sox continue a series with the horrendous Royals.

With an appropriately alarming pitching matchup of Kansas City’s Jakob Junis versus Chicago’s Dylan Covey, there’s no telling which team will stink less for an evening to move their record closer to only 30 games under .500. It’s close to a 50/50 proposition, so there’s no reason the White Sox should be a rising favorite.

It might not sound like much fun to back the team with the second-worst record in baseball, but it’s even less appealing to lay a price with the team with the third-worst record. The Royals have a strong enough chance at a rare victory today to justify this bet.

Keefer (4-1, $10,960), Granger (3-0, $10,655), Grimala (3-2, $10,100), Brewer (2-3, $8,960)

Case Keefer can be reached at 702-948-2790 or [email protected]. Follow Case on Twitter at twitter.com/casekeefer.
