New York Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton rounds the bases after hitting a two-run home run during first-inning baseball game action against the Toronto Blue Jays in Toronto on Thursday, March 29, 2018.

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

New York Yankees Even money at Boston Red Sox: $400 to win $400

Yes, I know the standings, and that the Red Sox are going for a four-game sweep of their archrivals tonight. I know Boston’s record and numbers indicate it’s not only superior to New York but also practically the entire league.

And yet, I still think the Yankees might be the better team. Or at least end up being the better team.

There’s no way I can pass on New York at Even money in a plus-pitching matchup. Masahiro Tanaka is on better form than David Price, and should help the frustrated Yankees bust out of a four-game losing streak.

The Yankees’ lineup, for the most part, hasn’t been the problem with 14 runs over the recent lineup. They should keep scoring on Price tonight.

The Yankees avoid the sweep at Fenway Park.

Current Standings: Keefer (5-1, $11,308), Granger (3-0, $10,455), Grimala (3-2, $9,900), Brewer (2-4, $8,240)
