The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Detroit Lions at Oakland Raiders, under 37 points: $440 to win $400

The NFL preseason is normally low-scoring by nature, and these teams don't figure to light it up in Game 1. The Raiders feature a janky offense that won't put together more than a couple touchdown drives in Jon Gruden's first game back as head coach, and Lions' quarterback Matthew Stafford is going into his 10th season as the starter, so don't expect to see him for more than a series or two.

Could the backups play well and push this total toward the over? Sure, but I'd bet on poor blocking, lots of procedure penalties and few points. The under seems safe.

Current Standings: Keefer (6-2, $11,208), Granger (4-0, $10,855), Grimala (4-2, $10,200), Brewer (2-4, $8,040)
