The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Oakland Athletics plus-170 at Houston Astros, $500 to win $850: Betting against Houston starter Gerritt Cole is not the best idea, especially given how dominant he has been at home this season (77.2 innings, 2.67 ERA, 0.93 WHIP). But Oakland lefty Brett Anderson should give the Athletics a chance in this one.

Anderson has been effective since returning from the DL last month, and he's getting better — three of his last four starts have been scoreless outings of seven innings or more. His numbers against Houston aren't encouraging, as the Astros bombed him for seven earned runs in three innings, but that was back in Early may in Anderson's second start of the year.

Given the way Anderson is pitching now, and the plus-170 value, I think it's worth putting some money on the A's and seeing if they can scratch out a few runs off Cole.

Current Standings: Keefer (8-4, $11,168), Grimala 6-2, $10,800), Granger (4-0, $10,255), Brewer (3-6, $7,500)
