The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Navy plus-7 vs. Army: $330 to win $300

Because there's only one game this week, count this as part of the column picking every college football game this season — which stands at 356-326-14 including 40-28-1 on top-rated plays. But this one is definitely a guess.

I have no clue what's going to happen in this annual rivalry. What I do know, however, is Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo has cost me a lot of money over the years. He consistently gets the best out of his teams even when it appears there's not a lot going for the Midshipmen.

There's not a lot going for Midshipmen here. Army has been the better team all year, and it would be no surprise if it rolls to a third straight victory in the series.

But a full touchdown is a gargantuan amount of points for a game expected not to have many. The total is set at 40 points, driven down from an opening of 42 by a deluge of money.

The Black Knights haven't been favored over the Midshipmen in 17 years either. They're good enough to be favored this year, but that has never stopped a Niumatalolo team from coming through before.

Current Standings: Brewer (11-12-1, $9,060), Keefer (18-17-2, $8,956), Emerson (0-0, $8,425), Grimala (11-11-1, $5,205)
