The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl – Middle Tennessee plus-7 vs. Appalachian State: $660 to win $600

The Blue Raiders caught fire over the second half of the season. They had won five of six, and covered in all of them, going into a devastating Conference USA Championship Game loss to UAB.

Middle Tennessee fell 27-25 as a 1.5-point favorite to UAB, but had a near 100-yard, 1.5-yard per play advantage. In other words, the Blue Raiders showed no signs of letting down and there’s no reason to believe they’ll do so against the Mountaineers.

Appalachian State has won five straight on its own, but none of the teams it beat are nearly as strong as Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders are undervalued because they’re only 8-5 straight-up, but the five losses all came to decent opposition.

They’re more battle tested than Appalachian State, and that will show in the bowl game. Middle Tennessee has a chance to win straight-up, so there’s no hesitation in taking a full touchdown on the betting line.

Current Standings: Keefer (19-17-2, $9,256), Brewer (11-12-1, $9,060), Emerson (0-2, $7,425), Grimala (11-12-1, $4,345)
