Vegas Play of the Day: Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl

Thu, Dec 20, 2018 (2 a.m.)

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

South Florida plus-3 vs. Marshall: $330 to win $300

There’s not a lot separating the Bulls and the Thundering Herd, even though it may appear that way based on the second half of the season.

South Florida has lost five straight, while Marshall was on a three-game winning streak before getting blown out in its regular-season finale against Virginia Tech. But their strengths of schedules couldn’t be much different.

South Florida’s American Athletic Conference was vastly superior to Marshall’s Conference USA. Not to mention, the Bulls get to play at home in the Gasparilla Bowl, as it’s contested at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

They deserve at least a slight adjustment on the betting line for that, but don’t appear to have gotten one. Marshall minus-3 would only be a fair number on a neutral field.

This game should be close either way, making the points the way to look.

Current Standings: Brewer (11-12-1), Keefer (19-18-2, $8,596), Emerson (1-2, $7,789), Grimala (11-12-1, $4,345)
