New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady looks to pass during the second half of the NFL Super Bowl 52 football game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018, in Minneapolis.

Sun, Dec 23, 2018 (9:24 a.m.)

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Bills plus-13 at Patriots, $440 to win $400: If you buy into the narrative that the Patriots dynasty is slowly fading, and if you buy into the narrative that the Bills have one of the NFL’s best defenses, then it’s worth a small play on the Bills this morning.

We’ve tried to write off the Patriots many times before — they, after all, are one of the league’s most-hated teams. But they are the unquestioned best franchise of this era, which means wagering against the Patriots could be considered a bad investment.

That’s especially true when wagering against the Patriots with Buffalo, which starts a rookie quarterback who struggles to pass the ball and ranks second-to-last in the NFL in points per game.

But the Bills defense is better than average. And the Patriots are hurting in the passing game with Josh Gordon leaving the team this week. Don’t be surprised if New England tries to rush its way to a victory, which will drain the clock in favor of underdog bettors and play into the Bills favor with its strong rush defense.

Current Standings: Brewer (12-12-1, $9,960), Keefer (19-19-2, $8,296), Emerson (1-2, $7,589), Grimala (11-12-1, $4,345)
