Vegas Play of the Day: Croatia vs. Denmark

Sun, Jul 1, 2018 (2 a.m.)

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Croatia vs. Denmark 90-minutes-plus-injury-time result draw at plus-225: $300 to win $675

Call me crazy to start off a new Play of the Day season with a long shot like this, but it looks like the best price on the board in today’s second World Cup game. Croatia is a trendy pick to win the World Cup after it flew out of Group D, but I still have my doubts.

It should beat Denmark, but only after a closer struggle than most expect. This line implies less than a 30 percent chance that the two teams are tied after regulation.

They’re more evenly matched than that, even if the early World Cup returns have made it look otherwise. I’ll gamble with my first wager of a new Play of the Day season, and hope Croatia’s hot streak cools down a bit.

Current Standings: Keefer (0-0, $10,000), Granger (0-0, $10,000), Grimala (0-0, $10,000), Brewer (0-0, $10,000)
