The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Seattle Mariners minus-128 vs. Los Angeles Angels: $384 to win $300

The Angels are scoring 4.4 runs per game, which puts them right around the middle of the MLB pack. Seattle starter Marco Gonzales beat LAA in his last game against them three weeks ago, and he's coming off a complete-game win over Kansas City last week. I think Gonzales holds the Angels to two or three runs, and Seattle supports him enough to get the win.

Current Standings: Keefer (2-0, $10,990), Brewer (0-0, $10,000), Granger (0-0, $9,800), Grimala (0-1, $9,500)
