The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Chicago Cubs money line at San Francisco Giants, plus-108, $300 to win $324: The Cubs are finally playing like contenders, having won eight of their last nine games to move to a season-best 15 games over .500 (51-36). The Giants, meanwhile, are 47-45 on the season but are clearly doing it with smoke and mirrors (and the managing of Bruce Bochy), as they've been cumulatively outscored 407-380 on the year.

The Cubs are just clearly the better team, and though the pitching matchup today slightly favors San Francisco starter Andrew Suarez (3-5, 3.92 ERA) over struggling Chicago hurler Kyle Hendricks (5-8, 4.27 ERA), I'm backing the better squad over a full nine innings. The Cubs will win this one.

Keefer (3-0, $11,290), Grimala (1-1, $9,800), Brewer (0-1, $9,500), Granger (0-0, $9,600)
