The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.
Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.
Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.
Boston Red Sox minus-200 vs. Toronto Blue Jays, $1,000 to win $500: Boston starter Eduardo Rodriguez is going for his 12th win this afternoon against Toronto. Rodriguez is one of the best pitchers in baseball; the Red Sox are arguably the best team. Yes, it’s not a smart idea to wager one-tenth of your bankroll in the first month of the contest — but this bet appears to be strong. And after dropping my initial two wagers, I’m already playing from behind.
Rodriguez started the season late because of a knee injury and needed a few appearances to get back into game shape. But he’s been unstoppable of late, posting an 8-3 record with a 2.82 earned run average in his last 12 starts. He’s allowed two runs or less in nine of those 12 outings, according to the Associated Press. Also, he’s 2-0 against Toronto with a 3.35 earned run average.
Toronto will start Sam Gaviglio, who surrendered two home runs in six innings against the Red Sox in late May.
Keefer (3-0, $11,090), Granger (1-0, $10,155), Grimala (1-2, $9,500), Brewer (0-2, $9,110)
