Vegas Play of the Day: British Columbia Lions at Ottawa RedBlacks

Fri, Jul 20, 2018 (12:22 p.m.)

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Ottawa RedBlacks minus-7 vs. British Columbia Lions: $330 to win $300

Who says football season hasn’t started?

Our neighbors to the north are already offering a betting appetizer that too many gamblers seem to be ignoring. There are always spots to make money in the Canadian Football League if bettors pay close enough attention.

One might be coming tonight at TD Place Stadium. This looks like one of the spots where wins are being over-valued.

Both teams come in at 2-2, but Ottawa has looked much better on the season. The RedBlacks played well in their first three games, before plummeting in a 27-3 loss to Calgary last week.

That should only help refocus them for the Lions, as it would be surprise to see anything other than their best effort. And even if the Lions counter with their own best effort, they might not have enough to keep up.

British Columbia has been far less impressive on the year, as their two wins have come by a total of 15 points. The Lions are getting outscored by a touchdown per game on average.

Playing at home off of a humbling loss, Ottawa should be able to win by more.

Keefer (3-0, $11,090), Granger (1-0, $10,155), Grimala (2-2, $9,900), Brewer (1-3, $9,060)
