Vegas Play of the Day: St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds

Tue, Jul 24, 2018 (12:56 p.m.)

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds under 10.5 runs: $440 to win $400

Eight straight Cardinals’ games had gone over the total before Monday's 2-1 series opening defeat to the Reds. The Reds had a recent run of seven straight overs themselves.

Bettors can’t seem to get that out of their minds, as they continue to call for the two teams to light up the scoreboard on a daily basis. Several sports books opened this total at 9.5, before action boosted it up an extra run.

The move has a lot to do with the starters, as neither Homer Bailey nor Austin Gomber strike fear in opposing lineups. But they’re not both guaranteed to implode.

And just because these teams have gone on over streaks recently doesn’t mean they’re destined to continue in that direction. If anything, it’s time to start looking the other way as the market (over)adjusts.

It’s a really high total, making it that much easier to back the under.

Keefer (3-1, $10,760), Granger (1-0, $10,155), Grimala (3-2, $10,500), Brewer (2-3, $9,560)
