Vegas Play of the Day: Winnipeg vs. Toronto

Fri, Jul 27, 2018 (12:15 p.m.)

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now underway, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers minus-10.5 versus Toronto Argonauts: $440 to win $400

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers just crushed Toronto 38-20 in last week’s matchup, and the two face off again seven days later. This time, the game is in Winnipeg, where the Blue Bombers are 2-0 against the spread, so I’m more than willing to lay 10.5 points with the home favorites.

In last week’s matchup, the Winnipeg offense was strong everywhere. From quarterback Matt Nichols’ 245 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions through the air, to running back Andrew Harris’ 161 yards and a score on the ground.

But the biggest issue for the Argonauts is at their own quarterback position. With regular starter Ricky Ray out with an injury, the Argonauts have thrust Missouri product James Franklin under center. The 27-year-old completed only 21-of-36 passes last week for a mere 151 yards, no touchdowns and an interception.

Winnipeg is 5-0 straight up in its last five meetings with Toronto, and 4-1 against the spread.

Keefer (4-1, $11,160), Granger (1-0, $10,155), Grimala (3-2, $10,300), Brewer (2-3, $9,360)
