Vegas Play of the Day: California at Washington State

Sat, Nov 3, 2018 (2 a.m.)

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

California plus-10 at Washington State: $1,100 to win $1,000

Well, my bankroll is torpedoed after I missed on a limit play two Saturdays ago. But where’s the joy in quitting?

It’s time to chase some losses with a game that jumped off of betting boards ever since week 10 lines posted last Saturday. It’s time to fade Washington State.

The Cougars have undoubtedly had an astounding year, but now they’re being pegged as potential Pac-12 champions mostly off of back-to-back wins against overrated teams — Oregon and Stanford. The situation is secretly much tougher this week, going into a game that’s considered less important but is actually every bit as dangerous against California.

The Golden Bears are finally rolling, with a two-game win streak of their own over Washington and Oregon State, and have the best defense in the Pac-12. The Cougars won’t score at will this week.

The Golden Bears’ upset over Washington was a better win than any the Cougars have managed this season, as they held the Huskies to 250 total yards. Coach Justin Wilcox is a master schemer, and will have something just as ferocious dialed up for Washington State.

California is playing too well to get double digits against any team in the Pac-12.

Current Standings: Keefer (13-12-2, $7,831), Grimala (10-9, $6,965), Brewer (5-11-1, $5,100)
