The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Anaheim Ducks plus-105 vs. Toronto Maple Leafs: $500 to win $525

The Maple Leafs are ending a West Coast road trip on a back-to-back with their backup goalie in net.

Does that sound like a team that should be favored? Didn’t think so.

The betting market’s aversion toward Anaheim has gone too far. It’s hard to be too jazzed about the Ducks right now, considering they’ve lost eight of their last 11 games, but they’re not that bad.

Just like they weren’t as strong as a 5-2 start to the season. The truth lies somewhere in the middle, which should begin to bear itself out.

And they have one advantage in virtually every game in their goalie, which is especially true here. Anaheim goalie John Gibson is on another level from Toronto’s Garrett Sparks.

The Maple Leafs have put together a successful California run, beating the Sharks and Kings over the last three days, but getting a third win will prove more difficult than it may appear.

Current Standings: Keefer (16-13-2, $9,506), Brewer (7-11-1, $6,300), Grimala (10-10, $5,705)
