The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Ohio State plus-4.5 vs. Michigan, Total Over 83, $990 to win $900

It is a handicapper’s dream: Getting points with the better team. And this better team is playing its rival at home.

Sure, Ohio State has struggled in recent weeks — especially last week in escaping with a win at Maryland. But in rivalry games, past weeks are meaningless. There is only one stat that matters: Ohio State coach Urban Meyer has never lost to Michigan in six games.

Both teams enter with 10-1 records, although Ohio State is just 4-7 against the betting number. And, to Michigan’s credit, it has only surrendered 41 points in the past four weeks, including three straight games of yielding just one touchdown.

But the Michigan defense hasn’t faced a quarterback like Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins, who has passed for 3,700 yards and 37 touchdowns with just seven interceptions. While the Shea Patterson-led Michigan offense is balanced with about 200 yards rushing and passing each game, the Wolverines only average 36 points per game.

They won’t be able score with Ohio State. And Michigan won’t be at its best on the road.

Current Standings: Keefer (18-15-2, $9,266), Brewer (9-11-1, $8,100), Grimala (10-10-1, $5,705)
