The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Houston Texans minus-3.5 vs. Tennessee Titans: $880 to win $800

Houston is riding a seven-game winning streak, but only three of those games were won by more than three points. The Texans appear to have mastered the art of playing defense, taking relatively good care of the ball and getting enough breaks to win the close games, which is usually enough to make the playoffs in the NFL.

Despite their affinity for close finishes, I like the Texans to win this one by more than one score. Quarterback Deshaun Watson has 10 touchdown passes and four interceptions in the last five games — all with 24 pass attempts or fewer — so it looks like Houston has found a successful offensive formula. Tennessee has a mediocre 5-5 record, and most of those wins came via smoke and mirrors.

Houston will win, and for a change the Texans will do it convincingly.

Current Standings: Keefer (18-16-2, $8,936), Brewer (10-11-1, $9,000), Grimala (10-10-1, $5,705)
