The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Washington minus-3 at Oregon: $550 to win $500

Why are we so convinced Oregon is good? To answer my own question, I guess it’s dominating most of the game against Stanford and then blowing out California the next week.

That brings me to another question — Why are so we convinced those performances are meaningful? Both the Cardinal and Golden Bears have only looked worse since amassing a larger sample.

California lost to Arizona the week after the Oregon game, while Stanford has gotten blown out against both Notre Dame and Utah.

All of this makes me unconvinced that Oregon deserves all the betting action it’s attracting for tonight’s game against Washington. But it’s keeping the spread deflated, and therefore, prompting a bet on the Huskies.

Washington is like the opposite of Oregon — They’ve been far better than its scores indicate. The Huskies have soundly outplayed all their recent opponents, despite not covering in touchdown-wins over Arizona State and UCLA.

That appears to have dropped their power rating, and now is the time to swoop in and take the Huskies before it goes back up. Oregon is nothing special. Washington might be.

Current Standings: Keefer (11-10-1, $10,081), Grimala (8-5, $9,120), Brewer (5-9-1, $5,850)
