Vegas Play of the Day: Georgia State at Memphis

Fri, Sep 14, 2018 (10:59 a.m.)

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Memphis minus-28.5 vs. Georgia State: $330 to win $300

Memphis outgained Navy by nearly 4 yards per play last week — and still somehow lost. And by somehow, I mean the Tigers lost because they committed four giveaways, including failing to recover three of their four fumbles.

That’s not going to happen again, and it’s entirely possible Memphis could be even more efficient coming off of a disappointing performance. Georgia State, which is struggling as it adjusts to a new core of players, shouldn’t provide much resistance.

The Panthers lost to North Carolina State 41-7 as 25-point underdogs last week, and it could have been worse. This game should be worse.

This large of a number always leaves a backdoor cover as a strong possibility, but with this being the only football game on the board, there’s no other choice but to take the risk.

Current Standings: Keefer (10-6, $11,091), Grimala (7-3, $10,500), Granger (4-3, $9,225), Brewer (4-7, $7,400)
