Vegas Play of the Day: San Jose State at Oregon

Sat, Sep 15, 2018 (2 a.m.)

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Oregon minus-41 vs. San Jose State, $660 to win $600: It’s never a good idea to lay 41 points in a football game, essentially asking the heavy favorites to score at least six touchdowns to have a chance to cover the spread. But San Jose State is really, really bad.

Last week, it was blanked 31-0 at Washington State. Two weeks ago, it surrendered 44 points at home in falling to lower-level Cal Davis. Oregon (2-0), meanwhile, is averaging 60 points per game in its initial two contests.

The Ducks, at best, are a middle of the pack team in the Pac-12 Conference. With league play starting next week against Stanford, Oregon will surely get its starters out after one half. Usually, that’s a cue to bet the other side. But San Jose is so bad it won’t matter. Oregon’s backups will try to pad their stats as this game will get ugly late.

Look for Oregon to win by 50 or more points.

Current Standings: Current Standings: Keefer (11-6, $11,391), Grimala (7-3, $10,500), Granger (4-3, $9,225), Brewer (4-7, $7,400)
