The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

USC minus-4 vs. Washington State: $330 to win $300

Stock couldn’t be lower on USC right now. After losing their last two games, the Trojans are experiencing a maelstrom of negativity with fans lamenting the state of the program and calling for the firing of coach Clay Helton.

In the immortal words of Aaron Rodgers: R-e-l-a-x. Helton might not be the right guy for the job in Los Angeles, but USC is going to be just fine. And it’s going to be just fine this season.

It might be fine starting tonight.

The Trojans came into the season with one of the youngest rosters in the nation, so it was obvious things were going to take some time to click. The only thing that really conspired against them was the schedule, as trips to Stanford and USC in the opening three weeks were too much soon for this team.

Washington State shouldn’t be. The Cougars are just as inexperienced as the Trojans, so much so that coach Mike Leach reportedly tried as hard as he could to bail from the program during the offseason until he couldn’t get the coveted bigger job he desired.

Washington State has pounded Wyoming, San Jose State and Eastern Washington to start the season. If USC had played the same schedule, there would be no uproar and it would be laying at least a touchdown here.

Buy low on the Trojans, lay the 4 points.

Current Standings: Current Standings: Keefer (11-7, $10,841), Grimala (7-3, $9,950), Granger (4-3, $8,825), Brewer (4-8, $6,540)
