Vegas Play of the Day: UCLA at Colorado

Fri, Sep 28, 2018 (11:23 a.m.)

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

UCLA plus-9.5 at Colorado: $330 to win $300

Maybe UCLA is destined to be one of the worst teams in the Pac-12 all season. I’m not so convinced.

It’s certainly been a rough start to coach Chip Kelly’s tenure, but the Bruins’ 0-3 start might not be quite as bad as it seems. They were never going to compete with an Oklahoma team that had them at a total talent deficit. Home losses to Cincinnati and Fresno State are more concerning, but those two teams will likely wind up as two of the better Group of Five conference teams this season.

They both might wind up better than Colorado, which is getting too much credit from the betting market. The Buffaloes’ best win this season? A close win over Nebraska.

And if things are bad at UCLA, they’re horrendous at Nebraska. Colorado deserves to be a favorite in this game, but it doesn’t deserve to be close to a double-digit favorite.

UCLA will be competitive.

Current Standings: Current Standings: Keefer (11-8, $10,911), Grimala (7-4, $9,250), Brewer (4-8, $6,340)
