The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.
Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.
Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.
Rutgers at Northwestern, Total Over 132, $880 to win $800: The last three Rutgers games have gone over the points total, including Saturday when the Scarlet Knights lost 99-94 to Illinois. Northwestern also played a high-scoring game in its most recent outing in losing 80-78 to Iowa.
There’s decent value is playing the total over 132 points when considering each team is coming off a high-scoring game. While both play at a deliberate pace, it’s not asking too much to score 66 points — slightly under the average output per game of each team.
Northwestern is a five-point betting favorite to signal a closely contested game. That means free throws at the end to extend the game and push the total over.
Current Standings: Brewer (16-15-2, $11,290), Keefer (26-23-2, $11,236), Emerson (3-3, $7,242), Grimala (15-16-1, $4,050)
