Vegas Play of the Day: Arizona Hotshots at Memphis Express

Sat, Feb 16, 2019 (11:52 a.m.)

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Arizona Hotshots minus-14 at Memphis Express: $330 to win $300

I don’t think this line can be high enough. Arizona appears to be the class off the new Alliance of American Football league, while Memphis looks like the opposite.

Fourteen points isn’t as prohibitive of a price in the AAF as it is in the NFL considering all the pro-offense rules. Yes, they didn’t really make a big difference in week 1 but it would be foolish to over-react to a set of four games.

Make that three games, because Arizona’s first contest actually was high scoring as it beat Salt Lake 38-22 behind what looked like the league’s best offense. Former Wake Forest star quarterback John Wolford thrived in coach Rick Neuheisel’s run-pass option offense.

This could backfire considering how little actual information I have to go off when it comes to betting the AAF. But it’s important to remember oddsmakers are dealing with the same conundrum.

And they’re always going to lean to the side of caution when it comes to posting a big number. By the end of the season, this might look like a small price to pay given the value of the two teams.

Current Standings: Keefer (26-23-2, $11,236), Brewer (16-15-2, $10,410), Emerson (3-3, $6,842), Grimala (15-16-1, $3,650)
