The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.
Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.
Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.
San Antonio Spurs minus-2 vs. Toronto Raptors: $880 to win $800
This has been billed as one of the biggest NBA games of the season since the schedules were released, but until recently the Spurs hadn't been holding up their end of the bargain. That has changed over the last month as San Antonio has won 10 of its last 13 games, including contests against playoff teams such as Denver, Boston, Philadelphia and the L.A. Clippers, so this is very much looking like a must-see event again.
Kawhi Leonard will be excellent in his return to San Antonio, but I'm not so sure about Kyle Lowry, who has missed a lot of time recently and will probably push himself to play tonight even if he's not 100 percent. That gives an edge to the Spurs, who are clicking on offense and averaging 115.6 points per game since the start of December.
The Raptors are capable of playing great defense, but San Antonio is just too hot right now. Take the motivated Spurs at home.
