This Dec. 23, 2018, file photo shows Houston Texans’ J.J. Watt reacting after the Texans forced a fumble during the first half of an NFL football game against the Philadelphia Eagles, in Philadelphia. “When you start off 0-3 and you’re sitting here at 10-5 with a chance to win the division on Sunday you’ve done a lot of good things over the course of those games since we were 0-3,” Watt says. “But we have to make sure that we do what we need to do to make sure that doesn’t all go to waste.”

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Indianapolis Colts vs. Houston Texans under 48.5 points: $330 to win $300

It hurts to type this, but the truth is, I don’t really like either of the wild-card round matchups today betting-wise. The numbers look pretty tight, at least as far as the sides.

Nothing is out of whack with the totals either, but this might be a couple points too high. The Colts and Texans might get a lot of acclaim for their offenses behind quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Deshaun Watson, but it’s their defenses that have delivered them to this point.

Both defenses played extremely well at the end of the season, and are poised to slow their opponent. This is practically the same total as when these teams met in December — it’s a half-point lower — and the game fell under with a 24-21 Colts win.

Even their September meeting wasn’t the shootout the final score may indicate. Yes, the Texans won 37-34 but nine points were scored in overtime and in the final eight minutes of the fourth quarter.

The defenses have improved since then, and are familiar with each other. Look for a 20-17-type battle at NRG Stadium.

Current Standings: Brewer (15-12-1, $10,660), Keefer (22-19-2, $10,456), Emerson (1-3, $7,062), Grimala (13-13-1, $4,830)

Case Keefer can be reached at 702-948-2790 or [email protected]. Follow Case on Twitter at twitter.com/casekeefer.
