Vegas Play of the Day: Chargers at Ravens

Sun, Jan 6, 2019 (8:27 a.m.)

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Chargers plus-3 at Ravens, $440 to win $400: Some simple logic with this wager: Take the experienced quarterback.

The Chargers’ Phillip Rivers, who many feel is a Hall of Fame quarterback, led Los Angeles to 12 wins. If it weren’t for the historically great season by the Chiefs, the Chargers would have won the AFC West. Instead, the have to travel to Baltimore for a wild-card game against the Ravens.

Rookie Lamar Jackson has been brilliant since taking over as the Ravens’ starter, winning six of seven games and dominating opponents with his rushing and passing ability. I’m just not certain if those efforts will hold in the playoffs, where the Chargers’ defense ranked eighth in the NFL in points allowed.

More important, this could be Rivers’ last chance to go on a deep playoff run and make a Super Bowl, which would cement his legacy as one of this era’s greats. It’s worth a small play, especially getting points with a desperate quarterback.

Current Standings: Keefer (23-19-2, $10,856), Brewer (15-12-1, $10,660), Emerson (1-3, $7,062), Grimala (13-13-1, $4,830)
