The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.
Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.
Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.
Miami Heat plus-2.5 vs. Boston Celtics: $440 to win $400
Over the last week, the Celtics have looked like the NBA Finals contender everyone expected at the beginning of the year, blowing out four straight opponents. Now is the time to sell high — at least momentarily.
They’ll have their hands full tonight with a sneaky-tough Heat team. Miami is one of the best defensive teams in the league, which will be a big adjustment for Boston after building its streak against mediocre slate of opposing defenses.
This is also a tough spot for the Celtics schedule-wise. This is a back-to-back and their third game in four days after blowing out the Pacers 135-108 Wednesday night.
These two teams split four meetings last season, with the Celtics only outscoring the Heat by three points total.
The Heat are more rested and had extra time to prepare for the Celtics. Those are not edges to look past, even if they’re at a disadvantage personnel-wise.
