The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.
Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.
Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.
Temple at East Carolina, Total Over 143, $880 to win $800: The over-under number is too low for this game, especially considering East Carolina likes to play at a fast pace. The Pirates rank 94th nationally out of about 350 teams with 74.1 possessions per game, meaning they will have plenty of scoring opportunities.
Temple averages about 75 points per game, including scoring more than 80 points in three of its last four games. Five of Temple’s past six games have covered the over.
Temple is coming off an upset victory against nationally ranked Houston. It’s squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble. It is should receive a stiff challenge from East Carolina, potentially leading to the game being extended in the final minutes from free throw attempts. That’s a good thing for total over bettors.
