Vegas Play of the Day: Knicks at Nets

Fri, Jan 25, 2019 (2:05 p.m.)

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

New York Knicks plus-9 at Brooklyn, $550 to win $500: The Nets and Knicks, arguably, are even teams. Brooklyn leads the season series 2-1, but all three games have been close — well, not on Oct. 29 when the Knicks won by 19 points.

Brooklyn will be without one of its top players in Spencer Dinwiddie, who has an injured hand. The Knicks, though, are one of the league’s worst teams and enter on a seven-game losing streak. You can argue the current stretch of bad play balances out a pair of close games in October between the teams.

But it is a battle for the New York area, and the arena should have plenty of Knicks supporters. It’s worth a small play at plus-9.

Current Standings: Brewer (16-13-1, $12,120), Keefer (25-20-2, $11,426), Emerson (2-3, $7,387), Grimala (14-14-1, $4,250)
