The sixth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2018-19 and 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

LSU plus-6 vs. Alabama, $660 to win $600: LSU always has one of college football's best defenses. This season, it also has one of the best offensive attacks and the likely Heisman Trophy winner. Forget about losing by six or less points to cover the spread, Joe Burrow and the Tigers will win straight up.

Burrow has passed for 2,800 yards and 30 touchdowns in eight games and the undefeated Tigers have the nation's fourth-highest scoring offense at 46.8 points per game. Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, on the other hand, is recovering from a leg injury and still not 100%. Some reports say he didn't have a spring in his step at practice.

Make no doubt about it: These are two of the nation's best teams and arguably the most highly anticipated game of the season. Let's hope it delivers a closely-contested game, which is great for LSU backers. It would be even better if Tua couldn't answer the bell.

Current Standings: Grimala (10-3, $11,545), Keefer (17-12-1, $9,945), Emerson (8-10, $8,290), Brewer (7-9, $7,375)
