Week 10 NFL picks and best bets for the Sun’s handicapping contest

In this Sept. 22, 2019, file photo, Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor argues for a call during the second half of an NFL football game against the Buffalo Bills, in Orchard Park, N.Y. Several teams are tanking, penalties are wrecking the flow of games, some of the biggest stars have been sidelined, the new pass interference rule appears to have been adapted only to quiet the uproar that started after last season’s NFC Championship game, and even though ratings are up, it all looks like one big mess on TV.

It's the shortest weekend of the year as far as betting options on the NFL.

With six teams on bye for Week 10 and Thursday Night Football completed, there are only 12 games on the board. That means the prognosticators in the Sun's handicapping contest will need to pick half of them.

The contest requires six picks a week, including a two-point best bet, from the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook's Supercontest lines.

Read below for all of this week's picks and best bets.

Case Keefer

Points: 36 (31-23)

Browns minus-3 vs. Bills

Steelers plus-3.5 vs. Rams

Packers minus-5 vs. Panthers

Vikings plus-3 at Cowboys

49ers minus-6.5 vs. Seahawks

Two-point best bet: Chiefs minus-3.5 at Lions. Another week, another stale line for my best bet in the contest. This one is particularly appetizing, though. The Titans are nowhere in the Chiefs' league. I think Kansas City had a good shot at beating this number without Patrick Mahomes — it was released when there was still more uncertainty surrounding whether he'd play or not — but with him, the Chiefs should be closer to a 7-point favorite.

Ray Brewer

Points: 31.5 (26-27-1)

Packers minus-5 vs. Panthers

Dolphins plus-10 at Colts

Steelers plus-3.5 vs. Rams

Bears minus-2.5 vs. Lions

Vikings plus-3 at Cowboys

Two-point best bet: Seahawks plus-6.5 at 49ers. The 49ers are the NFL's last remaining undefeated team. Its offense is third in the NFL in points per game at 29.3. Yet, having to beat a quality Seattle team by a touchdown or more is a big ask. The 49ers' defensive line has been great all season in pressuring the quarterback. Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson, though, is one of the best in the business in creating plays out of the pocket.

Justin Emerson

Points: 30 (24-29-1)

Chiefs minus-3.5 at Titans

Ravens minus-10 at Bengals

Colts minus-10 vs. Dolphins

Rams minus-3.5 at Steelers

Vikings plus-3 at Cowboys

Two-point best bet: Seahawks plus-6.5 at 49ers. I know they're 8-0 but I'm not a believer in the 49ers. Their defense is superb, but they have yet to face a true top quarterback that can test it. Russell Wilson might win the MVP and this will be a great challenge to see if the 49ers are an elite team. But I like Seattle, 7-2 in its own right, with 6.5 on the road.

Mike Grimala

Points: 24 (19-34-1)

Bills plus-3 at Browns

Giants plus-3 at Jets

Bears minus-2.5 vs. Lions

Rams minus-3.5 at Steelers

Vikings plus-3 at Cowboys

Two-point best bet: Seahawks plus-6.5 at 49ers. If there's an offense equipped to handle San Francisco's ferocious front, it's the Seahawks. Seattle will slow down the 49ers' pass rush with power runs, and that will give Russell Wilson a few extra beats to work his magic in the passing game. Not only will the Seahawks cover, they'll win outright.
