Vegas Play of the Day: Tennessee vs. Indiana

Thu, Jan 2, 2020 (1:42 p.m.)

The sixth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now underway, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2018-19 and 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Tennessee minus-3.5 vs. Indiana: $440 to win $400

As bad as Tennessee was to start the season, the Volunteers have stepped up their game. A 2-5 start turned into a five-game winning streak, even if it wasn't against the cream of the crop. Tennessee lost to just about every good team on its schedule, but flip those ugly losses into wins like they should have been, and we're talking about a 9-3 team in the SEC.

Indiana was similar, but not as impressive. The Hoosiers survived in one of college football's best divisions but didn't put up much of a fight against Ohio State or Michigan, though they kept it close against Penn State.

The Volunteers seemed motivated from the jeering that came their way at the beginning of the year. Look for them to cover 3.5 in the Gator Bowl tonight.

Current Standings: Grimala (11-5, $9,365), Keefer (22-20-2, $7,575), Emerson (11-15, $7,090), Brewer (9-10, $6,045)
