Vegas Play of the Day: Dayton at Rhode Island

Wed, Mar 4, 2020 (12:22 p.m.)

The sixth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now underway, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2018-19 and 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Dayton minus-3.5 at Rhode Island $990 to win $900: Dayton is closing in on an undefeated record in Atlantic-10 games and looks like a serious national-championship contender. They are playing for seeding in the NCAA Tournament, which means the Flyers will bring a maximum effort against an upset-minded Rhode Island squad. Dayton already has an 81-67 win against Rhode Island this season.

Although winning on the road against Rhode Island — which is looking to solidify its NCAA Tournament resume — will be tough, this Dayton team scores 80 points per game and will be up to the challenge. Dayton average 17.6 assists per game to rank ninth nationally out of more than 300 teams. That means it's not only one player who can lead Dayton to a win in a hostile road setting.

And Rhode Island is coming off a tough defeat, falling at home to St. Louis by double digits. I just don’t see them competing with Dayton.

Current Standings: Grimala (14-5, $8,665), Keefer (28-26-2, $8,275), Brewer (14-12, $6,805), Emerson (14-16, $6,150)
