Student arrested in shooting at middle school

A North Las Vegas boy has been arrested in the firing of pellets at two Swainston Middle School students.

The students, whom school authorities said suffered only minor bruises, were on the northwest side of the campus between buildings en route to class about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday when they were hit.

The alleged shooter is an eighth-grade Swainston student who had not gone to class Wednesday, said Officer Ken Young, Clark County School District police spokesman.

"He was at a residence very close to the school when he fired the BB gun," Young said.

Swainston Principal Susan Overmoen likened the seventh- and eighth-grade students' injuries to "about as serious as a bee sting. It could've been a lot more serious."

The school near Gowan Road and Simmons Street will take action against the unidentified shooter, but Overmoen declined to comment on whether the incident would be grounds for expulsion.

The student accused in the shooting was using a pellet gun off campus, yet Overmoen said there have been a few students caught on campus in the past with weapons.

"Any time we catch a student with a weapon on campus, we take the recommended action," Overmoen said, "and move for expulsion."
