Gaming family matriarch dies at 75

Roberta Mae "Bertie" Gaughan, 75, matriarch of a pioneer Las Vegas gaming family, died Monday at her home after a short illness.

Born May 10, 1921, in Hastings, Neb., Bertie Gaughan was married for 54 years to Jackie Gau ghan, owner of several Las Vegas casino properties. She was active in the day-to-day operations of the El Cortez until her illness confined her to her home.

She was a 10-year member of the St. Joseph's grammar school Parent Teachers Association and an eight-year member of the Bishop Gorman Parents' Club. She and her husband received the first annual Knight of the Gael Award from Bishop Gorman High School.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons Michael and Jackie Jr., seven grandchildren, sister Beverly Thompson and a nephew.

The viewing will be 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 1813 S. Maryland Parkway, with a Mass at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anne's.
