County Delays Action on Strip Bridges

Commissioners have been seeking a solution to traffic problems at the intersection of Flamingo Road and the Strip, where 300 accidents have been reported in the past three years. Some 80 percent of those accidents have been blamed on traffic congestion.

The county is considering building pedestrian bridges, similar to those at Tropicana and the Strip. But Mirage Resorts Inc. wants tunnels, saying bridges would obstruct views of their new $1.3 billion Bellagio resort, now under construction at the intersection.

Four bridges would cost $14 million, four tunnels $22 million, and three bridges and one tunnel $17 million.

County officials say they want the affected resort companies - Mirage, Caesars Palace, Bally's, Hilton and Barbary Coast - to reach a consensus. The resorts would have to pay the extra cost if they decide on one or more tunnels, according to county officials.
